Introducing the in-game magazine, Model Rolling Line! - v1.099: Todays update is a very special one!Have you ever read a model train magazine (*cough* Model Railroader *cough*) and wondered what it would be like if Rolling Line had something like that? Well I've spent the last couple of weeks working on exactly that! This magazine can be viewed in-game (both on PC and in VR) plus you can also read it online on the Gaugepunk Games website.[www.gaugepunk.com]This isn't the only one though! I'll be making new issues of this magazine alongside major updates, and in future issues I'll try to include some community-made articles. These magazines do take a ton of work to make though, so there will be quite large gaps (1-2 months) between making new ones. in fact you can even subscribe to get an email when a new issue is released! (just like a real magazine, but free).Simply send an email to subscribe@gaugepunk.com to get signed up automatically. This update is a little different to the usual, but what other train game has it's own in-game magazine?Enjoy! There's also a few other fixes and features in this update:Custom liveries that are not owned are instead replaced by the corresponding wagon from the base game (instead of an empty white wagon). e.g. a DX loco is replaced by a random color variant of the usual New Zealand DX. Fixed collision on the flat ground pieces, they should be much easier to use now. Added a couple of new basic shapes, a curved wall and a flat plank.. Santa Fe! - v1.15: The Santa Fe update is finally here! This is by far the largest update since Rolling Line's release, and includes brand new American trains, props and a new official map!The new map is inspired by some historical hot-spots of the Santa Fe Super Chief, like Pasadena Station (Los Angeles) and parts of the Arizona desert, like the Canyon Diablo Railway Bridge and Winona. You can access the new official layout by simply starting a new game from the main menu, and choosing the "Santa Fe" map. This map was made using tons of new custom track props that are also included in this update, like new buildings, classic cars, canyon rocks, bridges, traffic props and new colors. Though the star of the show is the new EMD F7 locomotive, along with the Super Chief streamliner passenger cars. Since this is quite a large update, here's the full list of changes made:Added F7 locomotive, A & B units in both the Warbonnet and Bluebonnet paint schemesAdded 4x steamliner passenger carsAdded 5x 1950's classic cars Added flipped level crossings, for American roadsAdded clock as individual placeable propAdded painters to remove & add ballast to track (you can use this to hide ballast on bridges/roller coasters Added special new main-menu scenes to celebrate the update Added new table wall segments with no black roof attachedThe sky continues up onto the roof in the custom table room nowProps now still randomize their scale if you change it (e.g. making trees very small will still have a slight randomized scale)reduced the near-clip of cameras on PC (makes items visible closer to your eyes)Changed how pausing time on the menu works, time will now resume with any movement (you use to need to move quite a distance away, which was confusing)Fixed bug where items on your belt were still active in miniature Fixed bug where a controller would still show a train driving when a new save was loaded Fixed issues with items like controllers/magazine racks not being hidden in miniature Plus - made some small changes to the Big Boy model, which looks much cooler nowThis update has been in the works for a while, and is certainly the largest update for Rolling Line I've ever worked on. This should be an example of the kind of "themed updates" i'm going to be making in the future!Custom liveries for the F7 and steamliner cars will be coming hopefully within the next week, as a separate update.Enjoy!. New steam effects! - v1.165: Today's update adds a bunch of improvements to Rolling Lines steam engines, including better in-cab details and new particle effects! All steam trains now have new 3D steam particles and various new effects (like steam being released from the cylinders when starting and stopping the engine). There are also now a few un-marked valves you can twist in each steam engines cab, these valves can be used to manually enable/disable each particle effect, which is excellent for screenshots! This update also includes a few fixes & features: You can now place controllers/edit tools back into their holders on the wall on PC, simply hold the trigger and point at the wall-mount to place it back Added more detail to the cab interiors of all steam engines Fixed mesh normals on one of the Santa Fe bridges Fixed collision on bridge track pieces I've finally got a considerable amount of time to focus on work, without any traveling or interruptions, so there should be some pretty great updates coming in the near future!Enjoy! Also, here are a few more pictures of the new steam effects in action:And the new cab interior details:. Gap-fill track (flexy track) and more! - v1.061: I'm sure everyone will be very happy about this one!Today's update adds "gap filling" track, which can be used to easily (and smoothly) connect two dead ends of track. Gone are the days of frustratingly trying to line up track. There are also a few other features: "roll" angle on gradient track is gone, so you wont end up with twisted angles on your track (making a helix is now possible) Added an "undo" button on the save menu, that will undo the last 'delete', 'save over' or 'quicksave' you did. Added a "recover last session" button to the save menu, that will load the last map you left (either from quitting the game, going to the main menu, or loading a save by accident). Added an option for "smooth" scaling when placing props, this makes scaling with the scroll wheel much more precise, and also allows for smooth scaling when using PageUp & PageDown. Turn this off for the original "snap" style, which has its own benefits Fixed collision on the large rock props Fixed issue with picking up and placing tunnel-painted track Fixed trains decoupling on lag spikes (hopefully) Enjoy! And have fun building tracks without the stress of misaligned track. Official soundtrack + 1 year anniversary! v2.0.2: It's been a full year since Rolling Lines release date! This means that it's Rolling Line's one year anniversary (well the 28th of April is) and to celebrate I've finally organized and uploaded the official Rolling Line soundtrack! The special thing about this OST is that it's entirely AI generated using an online tool called Jukedeck. Funny thing though is that the instruments and settings used to generate these songs are no longer available, so it's impossible to generate more music in the RL style. You can find all of these songs now on Youtube:https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLOsGRtw4Z48_c7a6zFg9B-0SKwpZhicXpAnd you can also download the album as MP3 files directly using the link in the description on any of the videos (Mega.nz links cannot be posed on Steam).Enjoy! In other news, the game has gone through a major Unity engine update, which wont have any visible effect on the game itself, but changes quite a bit behind the scenes. I've also decided to move to a more conventional version numbering system, so we are now on version 2.0.2 (previously 1.171).Paintability has also been added to a few more props, specifically the gas-tank props (which have been split into individual parts).Multi-painting has also been added to a couple of extra props, like tyers and the rusty cars. There is also now a variation of the level crossing prop without a bar. Next up in terms of updates, I may be doing something special for the 150th golden spike anniversary in the US!. New magazine! Nevada, Arizona and Utah - v1.145: Time for another Issue of Model Rolling Line! This issue features a tour of DeathRowTull's famous Nevada, Arizona and Utah layout. You can find the new magazine issue in-game or you can also read it on the Gaugepunk Games website[www.gaugepunk.com]Along with the new magazine issue, there are a couple of small fixes included in this update:Fixed issue with flexytrack where painted colors & styles were re-set when the track was picked up/places again. Made changes to how points (turnouts) are saved, hopefully this solves problems with points swapping values when saved. Oh, and a modified Big Boy (made to look like a Challenger) was also added, and hidden behind an Easter egg. Ask around and i'm sure you can find out how to access it. Enjoy!(Not long now till the Santa Fe update...). Bunch of user-made maps! + v1.02: This small update adds a bunch of user-made custom maps, along with a few small fixes. You can find all these maps under "Extra layouts" on the main menu.Thank you for all of your map submissions! let me know if you would like to update your map or if you would like a different thumbnail or name.In terms of fixes we have:- level crossings in custom track now work with editable details both on and off.- level crossing arms floating in strange ways is fixed.- fixed collision on car and bus.- added version number in "about" menu. Here's all the thumbnails of the new maps: (see if you can spot yours!). Paintable scenery & terrain update! v1.03: Today's update adds a ton of variety to how you can design your custom track scenery! (and a bunch more)You can now use the painter tools to paint both tress and terrain. There are a few more colors added too, so I can't wait to see what kinds of scenery people make with this.A terrain only layer has also been added, so you can now enable/disable editing for terrain alone. This is very useful for painting, as you can paint trees & track on their own layers. The table can only be painted when the terrain layer is enabled. Here is a full feature list:- added option for random rotation, scale and hue shift on scenery when placing (great for easy variety in scenery)- many more user-submitted maps added to extra layouts - added 'custom track' entry to pause menu: - adds option to allow deleting custom objects in your hand in VR (press the same button you would to teleport to miniature) - adds option to allow cloning custom objects in your hand in VR (press the same button you would to teleport to large scale to toggle whether a custom object will keep a copy in your hand after placing) This is exactly like holding shift on PC.- added 'confirm' menu when quicksaving- fixed issue where loading an invalid clipboard save would break things- added more painter colors- add terrain-only edit layer (as mentioned)- you can now pause at any stage in the tutorial. Tunnels & new terrain features - v1.057: Tunnels are finally in custom track! You can now build tunnels on your custom layouts along with a bunch of new terrain features and new props. Some new prop placing controls have been added too.You can now use the scroll wheel (or pageup/pagedown or your "up/down" buttons in VR) while placing a prop to change its scale. This means you can freely change the scale of any custom object! On PC you can also hold shift while placing a prop to change the height offset (also using the scroll wheel). this is incredibly useful for placing objects at a specific height, or building terrain. You can make tunnels by "painting" track with the tunnel painter, much in the same way as painting colors and track styles. There are props for tunnel ends and individual tunnel segments (for more complex tunnels). you can also make double-track tunnels by manually placing larger tunnel segments. There are quite a few new features in this update, so here is a full list: Added tunnel painter and tunnel end props Added ability to change prop scale (scroll-wheel while placing) Added ability to change prop height offset (scroll-wheel + shift while placing)Added "snap to angle" setting, which aligns props and track to 90 degree anglesAdded a range of simple geometric shapes like cubes and rampsAdded multiple new paintable trees, rocks and terrain segments Added some brown colored paintersAdded collision to custom track at all times, and changed collision on some objectsAdded "Clear all custom props" option, which deletes all props from a save, leaving only track (great for re-using the track from a previous layout)Fixed bug where trains would float in the air if placed on certain trackFixed bug which broke the workshop update menuFixed bug with object view distance setting on infinite causing invisible propsItems in your hands and on your belt are now not included in saves (this would always leave a pile of props on the floor where you saved)Added options to enable/disable editing on the "global" region (areas outside of custom track tables). this is useful for building scenery on the main layout, or just anywhere outside of workbench space. Enjoy! In other news, I just did the Tranz Alpine rail journey here in NZ last weekend, and it was excellent. Future "Southern Alps" expansion will be coming one day without a doubt!. Official map of Rolling Line!: This map shows the games 'pre-built' model railway layout, featuring a bunch of real-world inspired locations from New Zealand! (where I live) You can also build, save and share your own custom tracks and scenery
